On this Day in Weather History...
In 1930, a violent tornado struck Barton and Rice counties. Passing along the south side of Ellinwood, the tornado possessed a path 27 miles long, one quarter mile wide, and caused $300,000 damage. In 1995, severe thunderstorms moved across North Texas and Oklahoma. Particularly hard hit was the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, where hail reached the size of baseballs. 400 people were injured, most of whom were attending a carnival in Ft. Worth. The hail damaged 70 aircraft at DFW Airport including a British Airways D C 10 that was preparing for departure. Lightning was so intense that one of the terminals lost power for about 1 minute. Flash flooding with the storms resulted in 19 fatalities.
