Centennial Fishing Derby Held at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, June 14, 2003
Print Friendly Version
A centennial fishing derby was held at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge's Eagle Pond on June 14. There were 25 registered youths with approximately 18 parents participating in the event. Each registered youth received a free hot dog and drink compliments of the Friends of Blackwater. Don Willey from Chesapeake Model Boats in Salisbury, Md. provided demonstrations on knot tying during a break from fishing.

Prizes were awarded to the four youngsters for the heaviest fish caught in each of three age groups and also one for the first fish caught. After two hours of hot, humid weather with lots of mosquitoes, prizes were distributed every 15 minutes so each participant still fishing received a prize. Each participant who caught a fish received a Polaroid photo holding their fish. The highlight of the day was the first fish caught after fishing for half an hour. A frog jumping contest and turtle race were also held, with prizes to the winners donated by the Friends of Blackwater. Other prizes were donated by Wal-Mart, Gootees marine, and Tommy's Sporting Goods. The Friends of Blackwater also donated T-shirts for each participant with their gift bag at registration.

There were seven staff members and 14 volunteers who assisted with the event. Maryland Department of Natural Resourses Fisheries Division stocked the pond, Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company donated drinks and Bass Pro Shops in Hanover, Md., donated 15 rods and reels.

The event was postponed from the original date on June 7 because of a heavy rain. As a result, Bill Ledley, a professional bass pro wasn't able to attend the second date. Also, several volunteers from the Grand National Waterfowl Association and Maryland Saltwater Sportsfishing Association were unable to help as planned.

Since there were several other youth fishing events the same day, the media did not make the event. However, a news release with photos was sent to our media list and several articles were printed. In spite of the weather, change of location and change of date of the event, it was a successful fishing derby and the kids had a great time.
