Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge Receives Funding from Defenders of Wildlife
Northeast Region, February 28, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge received $5,000 from Defenders of Wildlife through the Earth Friends Wild Species Fund.  The funding will be used by the refuge to continue restoration of native shrub and brushland habitat for the benefit of the New England cottontail (Sylvilagus transitionalis).  New England cottontail populations have been declining over the last two decades and the rabbit is currently a candidate species for the Threatened and Endangered Species List.  With the funding from the Defenders of Wildlife the refuge will extend the seasonal restoration coordinator position for three additional weeks and purchase much needed volunteer and restoration supplies.  This financial assistance will also allow the refuge to replace 300 native shrub greenhouse plants which were destroyed by voles, thereby allowing us to plant over 400 shrubs to create suitable New England cottontail habitat.  Defenders of Wildlife has agreed, for the second year, to assist with the advertisement of work days and recruitment of volunteers for restoration activities.
