Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge volunteers honored at recognition dinner

On May 20, the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge's 19th Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner was held overlooking the Great Swamp at the Basking Ridge Country Club. Sponsored by the Friends of Great Swamp NWR, the evening was enjoyed by a record 80 volunteers and 15 guests. A total of 204 volunteers contributed 6,286 hours in 2004. Refuge Manager William Koch and Tom McFadden, outdoor recreation planner, presented awards and highlighted the work done by the volunteers in 2004. In addition, the Somerset County Environmental Education Center, Morris County Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center, and the Great Swamp Watershed Association attended the event and were recognized for their continued support of the refuge.

Volunteer and Friends of Great Swamp Refuge President Judy Schmidt received the 1,500 Hour award and pin. Laurel Gould, volunteer and Friends treasurer, received the 1,000 Hour pin while six other volunteers received the 500 Hour award. All volunteers received awards for their volunteering efforts.

Volunteers staffed the Friends of Great Swamp NWR gift shop and visitor contact station on weekends. In addition, they provided visitor information at the wildlife observation center and the overlook on weekends. Volunteers also conducted environmental education and interpretive programs and assisted with a number of maintenance and resource management activities.
