Visitors and birds meet at Wings Over the Watershed
Northeast Region, May 30, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Residents of the Connecticut River watershed are discovering that this year's International Migratory Bird Day was just the beginning! Visitors are now enjoying many events at many locations throughout the watershed in the ?Wings over the Watershed? program, which highlights migratory birds.

Although heavy rain washed out the first night's woodcock walk at Montshire, Vt., visitors heard all about the habitat and management of the American woodcock, had the opportunity to sex and age the birds by their wings, and returned the next night to see and hear woodcocks in the field. After 15 minutes of silence, the expectant crowd finally heard the first call off in the distance. Soon after, they not only could hear the courtship flight, but also could observe it. ?How incredible,? one woman whispered to her husband. The evening was complete when one of the chunky, quail-sized birds flew right overhead, allowing everyone to see more than just its silhouette.

At the Great Falls Discovery Center in Turners Falls, Mass., visitors were treated to several bird walks. Other weekends featured special wheelchair-accessible walks, a talk and walk about nightjars, and youngsters trying their hand at nest-building. The Pondicherry division also offered bird walks.

Wings over the Watershed will continue for the next year at locations all over the Connecticut River Watershed.
