Local Students Post 29 Miles of Boundary at Conte Refuge's Nulhegan Basin and Pondicherry Divisions
Northeast Region, November 3, 2004
Print Friendly Version

The Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge has worked with the Northwoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston, Vt., a local non-profit organization, to provide conservation education and summer employment for area youth. Two crews, ages 12 to 15, participated.  One helped mark division boundaries with signs in the very rugged, wet, remote, and challenging terrain of the refuge's Nulhegan Basin Division in Vermont, where they spent two weeks and were able to post a total of 21.3 miles of boundary! The second crew worked at the Pondicherry Division in New Hampshire for one week and was able to complete eight miles of boundary posting and clearing.

This year's crew accomplished a total of almost 30 miles of boundary posting for the refuge! The boundary identification wouldn't have been possible without their help, due to the small size and limited availability of our staff at Nulhegan and the total absence of permanent staff at Pondicherry.
