JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO HOST CONFERENCE ON

DIVERSITY IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Justice Department will host a conference entitled "Race, Ethnicity and the Law: Challenges Facing the Legal Profession," that will bring lawyers from a variety of fields together to examine the challenges of race and ethnicity facing the legal profession. Attorney General Janet Reno, Education Secretary Richard Riley and White House Counsel Charles Ruff will be among the featured participants. William Bowen and Derek Bok will also discuss their influential book The Shape of the River: Long-Term Consequences of Considering Race in College and University Admissions.

Conference participants will begin to examine how the legal profession can best serve its clients while facing the challenges of today -- whether institutions of legal practice are keeping pace with the dramatic changes in our society; what makes a "good lawyer"; have firms and corporations recognized their own needs; and, are law schools identifying students who will serve the needs of the profession?

WHAT: DOJ Conference on Diversity in the Legal Profession

WHEN: Tuesday, June 8th, 1999

WHERE: Georgetown Law Center - Moot Court Room 600 New Jersey Avenue, NW

Washington, D.C.

An agenda of the conference is attached. Panels open to the press are listed in bold. All media wishing to attend the conference should call Christine DiBartolo at 202/353-8584.
