WASHINGTON– The U.S. General Services Administration's (GSA) today announced that its state-of-the art information technology application to advertise federal contract opportunities on the Internet has won a 2003 Government Computer News Award for Innovative IT Accomplishments.

GSA was recognized for operating, maintaining and enhancing FedBizOpps.gov, the federal Web site that publishes agency requests for products and services valued above $25,000. GSA's Office of Electronic Government in the Office of Governmentwide Policy and the Federal Supply Service's FedBizOpps Technical Team represented GSA in a field of 120 government organizations in the Government Computer News competition.

"This award reflects President Bush's E-Government efforts to harness the Internet and related technologies to make government more effective at lower costs to the taxpayer," said Mary Mitchell, GSA's Program Executive For E-Government Policy. "Offering federal buyers and vendors enhanced ability to post and retrieve information to meet their needs, FedBizOpps demonstrates the teamwork and professionalism essential to achieving E-Government objectives."

The FedBizOpps concept evolved, in large part, thanks to strong, early executive leadership by Dee Lee of the Department of Defense. Today the FedBizOpps.gov Web site:
Records more than 30 million hits each month.
Sends more than 250,000 emails daily to vendors who ask to be notified of solicitations in their fields.
Posts more than 480,000 solicitation documents.

Stuart Dvorkin of GSA's Federal Supply Service leads the FedBizOpps Technical Team. Mary Mitchell of GSA's Office of Governmentwide Policy and her E-Government staff provide executive management support.

GSA is a centralized federal procurement and property management agency created by Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. It acquires, on behalf of federal agencies, office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies and services. GSA, comprised of 14,000 associates, provides services and solutions for the office operations of over 1 million federal workers located in more than 8,000 government-owned and leased buildings in 2,000 U.S. communities.
