Acting Administrator David J. Barram of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) today announced the appointment of Paul E. Chistolini, administrator of GSA's Mid Atlantic Region in Philadelphia, as Deputy Commissioner of GSA's Public Buildings Service. The appointment is effective in January 1997.
"Paul has had a long and distinguished career in real estate with GSA and with the Department of Defense, experience that makes him the ideal choice for this challenging assignment," Barram said.
As the number two person in the Public Buildings Service -- GSA's real estate operation -- Chistolini will oversee asset management and design, construction, leasing, operating and disposals for a real estate portfolio of about 280 million square feet in some 8,000 public and private buildings housing more than one million federal workers. The annual budget for this activity is about $5.5 billion, nearly 90 percent of which is contracted to the private sector.

Prior to heading the GSA region in Philadelphia, Chistolini was Deputy Director of real estate and facilities for the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. In the latter position he was responsible for the day to day operation of the Pentagon, which included lease management of 40 buildings, plus planning and executing the ongoing $1.2 billion renovation of the Pentagon building, and providing a wide variety of law enforcement and administrative services for the Secretary of Defense. Approximately 1,250 personnel worked under Chistolini's supervision, and he directed an annual budget of $300 million.
Chistolini also served as Deputy Regional Administrator of GSA's National Capital Region from May 1989 to September 1990 and as Assistant Regional Administrator for Real Estate and Development from October 1986 to May 1989. In this capacity, he was responsible for the real estate acquisition, repairs and alterations, construction, and the overall planning associated with the use of all GSA facilities in the region.
From May 1984 to October 1986, Chistolini extended his services to the GSA regional offices of New York and Boston by serving as Assistant Regional Administrator for Public Buildings and Real Property in those areas. Other GSA positions held by Chistolini include Assistant and Deputy Commissioner for Buildings Management, Executive Assistant to the Public Buildings Service Commissioner, and Buildings Management Specialist.

Chistolini, an Air Force veteran, joined GSA as a management intern in 1974.
