Federal employees earn both annual and sick leave.

Annual Leave

Annual leave is available for employee vacations or personal time.

  • New employees earn 4 hours of annual leave each pay period (bi-weekly) for a total of 13 days per year. 
  • After 3 years of federal service you earn 6 hours of annual leave bi-weekly, and 8 hours bi-weekly after 15 years of federal service. 
  • In addition, there are 10 paid holidays per year.

  • Employees in the Senior Executive Service earn 8 hours of leave regardless of years of service.
Sick Leave

Sick leave is available for personal medical needs, care of a family member, and adoption related purposes. Federal employees earn 4 hours of sick leave bi-weekly for a total of 13 days per year. Additional information about sick leave can be found at the Office of Personnel Management’s website.

Voluntary Leave Transfer Program

The Voluntary Leave Transfer Program allows employees to share their accrued annual leave with other employees who are faced with economic hardship because of insufficient leave to cover a personal or family medical emergency.
