The NWS Forecast Office in Tallahassee (WFO TLH) is responsible for providing advanced warning of severe weather for its 48-county area of responsibility. These warnings are based on WSR-88D data from our own WSR-88D Doppler weather radar in Tallahassee. We also routinely access similar Department of Defense radars at Eglin AFB in the Florida Panhandle, Fort Rucker in southeast Alabama, and Moody AFB in south central Georgia.
Our County Warning & Forecast Area (CWFA) includes the Eastern Florida Panhandle, the Florida Big Bend, Southeast Alabama, and Southwest and South Central Georgia. Our warnings and statements are distributed to the general public via mass news media, emergency management, law enforcement agencies, and other government agencies through various communications channels. Of course, they are also available over the Internet.
We also insure that Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Watches issued by the Storm Prediction Center, Norman, OK, and Hurricane Watches and Warnings issued by the National Hurricane Center, Miami, FL, are received by the public within our CWFA. Flash Flood Watches are issued by WFO TLH.
