STATEMENT BY JOEL I. KLEIN

Joel I. Klein, Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Department's Antitrust Division issued the following statement today regarding the Microsoft case:

"We have not received any settlement proposal from Microsoft. The Justice Department has always been and remains open to a settlement that fully protects consumers and assures that similar antitrust violations do not occur in the future. Let me just add, that if there are to be any settlement discussions, it is best that they occur directly between the parties, so I will not be commenting further."
