Paige Names Five To National Research Advisory Board

U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige has appointed five new members to the National Educational Research Policy and Priorities Board. The 15-member board works with the Education Department's assistant secretary for educational research and improvement to develop the agency's long-term research and development agenda.

"Quality research about teaching and learning plays a prominent role in President Bush's No Child Left Behind plan for education," Paige said. "President Bush has made it clear that what happens in the classroom should be based on a solid foundation of proven methods and techniques. This board can help the department focus on what we know and what we still need to find out."

Appointed to six-year terms are:

By law the board has three categories of members: five are chosen from among researchers nominated by the National Academy of Sciences; five are outstanding school-based educators; and five are individuals who are knowledgeable about the educational needs of the United States. Established as part of the Educational Research, Development, Dissemination, and Improvement Act of 1994, the board meets quarterly.
