Dating to 1866, the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center has also been known as the Battle Creek Federal Center, the Percy Jones Army Hospital, the Battle Creek Sanitarium, and the Western Health Reform Institute. In 2003, the Federal Center was given its current name in honor of three U.S. Senators who were patients there during World War II: Philip Hart of Michigan, Robert Dole of Kansas, and Daniel Inouye of Hawaii.

Building Hours and Access
The complex is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except federal holidays). All visitors must submit to security screening and present a valid identity card (such as a state driver's license or federal ID) before entering the building. Cell phones, cameras, and laptop computers are permitted; laptops will be recorded with a property pass. The main entrance is in Building 2 on Washington Avenue.
Parking and Public Transportation
Visitors may park for less than two hours without a permit on the west side of Washington Avenue south of Sanitarium Avenue, directly across from Building 2. Parking longer than two hours requires a permit, which can be obtained from security in Room 1-G-6 in Building 1 between the hours of 6:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Battle Creek Transit's Kendall-Goodale bus has a stop in front of the Federal Center.
Building Amenities
- Cafeteria – Building 1A, first floor. Hours: 7 a.m.– 10 a.m., 11 a.m.– 1:30 p.m.
- Snack Bar – Building 2, first floor. Hours: Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m.– 3:30 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m.– 3 p.m.
- Vending – Building 1, ground floor.
- ATM – Building 1, first floor.
- Credit Union – Building 2, first floor. Hours: Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.– 3:30 p.m.; other weekdays, 8 a.m.– 3:30 p.m.
History and Architectural Features
Designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style popular for early 20th Century academic buildings, the facility has been well-maintained for future generations. The facility features murals by J.J. Haidt, Ionic and Corinthian columns, imported Italian marble, and decorative moldings and ceilings. The center consists of 21 buildings on 24 acres, four of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places with two more eligible.
The Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center is one of more than 80 properties featured in the Public Buildings Service Heritage Program. This program details more than 150 years of notable construction through an award-winning series of posters and brochures, and its webpages explain the architecture and history of each featured building.
Tours
Weekday tours of the H-D-I Federal Center are offered by appointment only. For more information, please call the Defense Logistics Information Service Public Affairs Office at (269) 961-7015. All visitors’ names are required in advance, and a photo ID for each is needed on the day of the tour.
