5400 Federal Plaza
Hammond, IN 46320

Winner of a 2008 Energy Star Award for energy efficiency and a 2008-09 BOMA Office Building of the Year (TOBY) award for suburban Chicagoland, the Hammond U.S. Courthouse is located on a 6.9-acre block bounded by the city's historic Main Street to the west, Clinton Street to the north, Lyman Avenue to the east, and East Douglas Street to the south.

Facing east across the trees and open landscape of Indiana, the courthouse entrance is distinct and inviting. The horizontal emphasis of the attic story echoes the flat Midwest prairie. The exterior is built of limestone and precast cladding over concrete block and metal stud back-up with aluminum windows.

The courthouse, completed in 2002, provides space to accommodate the 10-year needs of the U.S. Courts and related federal agencies. The courthouse includes three District courtrooms (including one Special Proceeding), as well as two Magistrate and two Bankruptcy courtrooms. The courtrooms feature English brown oak paneling and millwork, state-of-the-art audio/visual technology, and an innovative circular layout that places the witness stand at the center of the space between the judge and a curved, free-standing jury box.

In the most recent (2007) GSA/Gallup Tenant Satisfaction Survey, the courthouse scored 100% "very satisfied" (four or above on a five-point scale).
