MEMORANDUM FOR BUREAU PERSONNEL OFFICERS
FROM:
Joanne W. Simms
Director, Personnel Staff
Justice Management Division
SUBJECT: Reasonable Accommodation Language in Vacancy Announcements
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) recently issued the Plan for Employment of People with Disabilities. Under this plan, agencies will include language in vacancy announcements that states that reasonable accommodations will be made for qualified applicants or employees with disabilities.
Effective immediately, the Department will include the following reasonable accommodation language in their vacancy announcements:
The Department of Justice provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities. If you need a reasonable accommodation for any part of the application and hiring process, please notify the hiring servicing personnel office. The decision on granting reasonable accommodation will be on a case-by-case basis.
OPM will publish in the Federal Register a proposed rule on the reasonable accommodation language to provide further guidance and allow an opportunity for comments. We will provide your staffs a copy of the proposed rule as soon as it is available.
If you need additional information, please contact Ms. Rachel Villare, of my staff's DOJ Operations Group, on (202) 616-3707.
