Title: Water Treatment and Education in Villahermosa, Mexico
William Marsh Rice University students will design and construct a water treatment facility for several schools and communities in developing nations with water supplies contaminated by waste runoff. The facility will include a sand filtration system with a filter shell made from local materials. The mold for the biosand filter is completely sustainable and will be donated to the communities so they can make additional biosand filters for point-of-use water purification. In addition, the system uses a UV sterilization system powered by a solar array.
