Coral Ecosystems

Global warming has an affect on every ecosystem in the world including coral ecosystems. These two Web Seminars covered the life of coral ecosystems, the issues surrounding their existence what can be done to preserve them. The first seminar took place on Thursday, April 10, 2008 and focused on the impacts to coral reefs. The presenter, Kelly Drinnen, Education Specialist for the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, talked about how environmental stress, human recreation, watersheds, animals and industry are impacting the health of coral reefs. The second seminar on Thursday, May 8, 2008 was presented by Dr. Kathy Chaston, Coral and Costal Management Specialist with NOAA’s office of Coastal Resource Management, who focused on coral biology, the value of coral reefs and land-based pollution impacts and management actions. These seminars were designed for educators of grades 5-12.
