Education Department Extends Deadline for Grant Competitions Disrupted by Government Shutdown

U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley announced today that the Education Department will extend until mid-March the deadlines of more than $37 million in grant competitions that were disrupted by the recent government furlough.

In a notice published in yesterday's Federal Register, Riley said the postponements would affect most competitions that had been scheduled to close between Dec. 18 when the furlough began and Feb. 15, about a month after the department resumed full operations.

The action was taken, Riley said, "to allow more time for the preparation and submission of applications by potential applicants adversely affected by the closure of the department for a number of weeks. The extensions are intended to help these potential applicants compete fairly under these programs."

In addition to a three-week budget-related shutdown, the department was also closed for several days in January because of snow and ice. As a result, many prospective applicants were unable to obtain application packages. Others could not get answers to questions about their applications.

Those who had already submitted their applications during that time may submit amended or replacement documents.

Riley warned applicants that Congress has not yet enacted a fiscal year 1996 appropriation for the department.

"Based on actions taken so far, the Congress may eliminate or reduce funding in 1996 for some of the discretionary grant programs referenced in this notice," Riley said. "Thus, final action on the 1996 appropriation may require the department to cancel some of these competitions."

More information about department funding opportunities, including copies of application notices for discretionary grant competitions, can be viewed on the department's computer bulletin board (ED Board), which can be reached by modem at (202) 260-9950.

Similar details are available on the department's Internet Gopher Server at gopher.ed.gov (under "Announcements, Bulletins, and Press Releases") and on the World Wide Web at http://www.ed.gov/money.html.
