RILEY BACK ON THE JOB

U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley returned to the office today, following surgery in mid-October.

"[Deputy Secretary] Madeleine [Kunin] has done a great job in my absence," Riley said, "and I'm very grateful to the employees for their hard work that kept the department humming along. My heartfelt thanks to everyone."

Riley had prostate surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Oct. 18. He said his recovery is nearly complete and he expects to return to a full schedule shortly.
