Statement by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley Regarding President Clinton's Seven-Year Balanced Budget

The President's seven-year budget is not only balanced, it is responsible. It keeps faith with children and families and strengthens the national commitment to prepare students for the future.

The President really had no choice but to veto the congressional majority's assault on public education. It is simply indefensible to ask the children of the nation to finance a tax cut for the wealthy.

The case for investment in education is clear and compelling. On this point, there is no room for retreat.
