Statement of U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley Regarding the House Senate Conference Action on the Careers Bill (H.R. 1617)

It's sad that our widely successful bipartisan effort to improve the employability of our youth would be sacrificed for politics. Congressional Republicans bowed to the wishes of extremists who would abolish School to Work one of the most promising bipartisan advancements in education in a generation. Thousands of young Americans across the country have begun to benefit from the combination of academic and job skills which School to Work provides. America's students should not be held hostage by a misinformation campaign by a few and denied the math and science skills that they will need to compete in an increasingly technological world. I will recommend to the President that he veto this measure.
