Student Programs At NWS Milwaukee/Sullivan

There are three primary student programs:

1)  A summer volunteer position designed primarily for college students in their Freshman of Sophomore year.   The student would typically volunteer once per week for about 8 hours during the summer.  Job shadowing and several projects involving meteorological data are common.

The announcement for this volunteer program at the Milwaukee/Sullivan office comes out here and on our "Top News of the Day" around January each year.  Students are asked to send in a resume and then are selected by February/March for the following summer.  This involves a full security clearance plus fingerprinting (at a cost of about $10 to the student).

2)  A Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) position.  This is a paid position for college students normally in their Sophomore or Junior years.  This often leads to permanent employment with the NWS after the student graduates.

The announcement for the SCEP program comes out here and on our "Top News of the Day" around February/March each year.   There are usually 10 or so positions selected for various positions within the 38 office central region which stretches from Michigan and Kentucky to Colorado and Wyoming.   These selections are made at our regional headquarters in Kansas City.

3)   A one day job shadow, typically lasting about 4 hours.  This is open to College Students and exceptional High School students that are keenly interested in Meteorology, Hydrology, Electronics, and Computer Science.  Students would interact with our staff while they are performing their routine operational duties to get a feel for what we do at a local National Weather Service Forecast office.
