What are Indian Health Service’s prevention indicators?
 
The GPRA measures – Breast Feeding and Tobacco Cessation relate to HPDP community based efforts.
 
When will the California Area Indian Health Service (CAIHS) prevention initiatives be implemented?
 

In 2004 CAIHS prevention initiatives began and includes: site visits; technical support and trainings. In 2007 CAIHS initiated efforts to integrate the CAO Director’s 3 Health Initiatives, Behavioral Health, Chronic Disease Management and Health Promotion/Disease Prevention to improve the ability to address the significant health disparities in Indian Country will be strengthened.

 
Why focus on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention?
 

Addressing lifestyle related diseases will help improve the health of California Indian people. Working together to improve modifiable conditions, such as activity level, food choices and tobacco usage will help. They may prevent the onset of such diseases as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity, all leading causes of disability and death.

 
What programs are under the IHS Health Promotion/Disease Prevention Initiative?
 

The National Just Move It campaign, Physical Activity Kit, Restoring Balance Community-Owned Wellness manual and Healthy Native Communities Fellowship are key Programs supported by the Initiative.
