At the U.S. Department of Education this morning, William D. Hansen, of Virginia, took the oath of office as deputy secretary of education. Hansen was previously executive director and CEO of the Education Finance Council. Before that, he served in several positions with the department, including assistant secretary for management and budget, and chief financial officer. In addition, Hansen has served on several state and national boards and commissions on reforming elementary and secondary schools and increasing access to higher education. Hansen was also the transition team director for the Department of Education for the Bush-Cheney Transition.

The president announced his intention to nominate Hansen on March 8 and nominated him on April 23. The Senate confirmed the nomination on May 22.

"I am delighted to have Bill Hansen on board," U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige said. "Bill knows this department better than anyone, and he will be invaluable in helping to address its current management challenges. Even more important, having been a long-time adviser to President Bush on education policy, Bill will play a central role in enacting the president's education agenda and ensuring that no child is left behind."
