GSA's Fifth Annual Achievement Awards for Real Property Innovation Recognize Federal Real Estate "Best Practices"

Washington, D.C. �The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) held its fifth annual Achievement Award for Real Property Innovation ceremony on Oct. 10, 2001, at the American Institute of Architects Building in Washington, D.C.

A panel of public and private sector experts from the United States and Canada selected the two winning entries, both in the best policy category. A team from the Department of the Army won for "Sustainable Army Communities." A team from GSA's Public Buildings Service (PBS) won for their entry "Linking Budget to Performance."

Three honorable mention entries also were acknowledged at the ceremony. A team from the Department of Transportation's United States Coast Guard received recognition for "Shore Facilities Capital Asset Management." A team from the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and GSA received recognition for "EPA's New Sustainable Campus." The U.S. Postal Service's Denver Facilities Service Office received recognition for "First Straw Bale Post Office."

OGP's Office of Real Property developed the Innovation Awards to recognize the successes of the Federal real property community, to improve communications between real property professionals, and share the best policies and practices implemented by Federal agencies. This year, 15 Federal agencies participated in the submission of 47 entries. This year's entries covered various categories, encompassing best practices in real estate policy, real property management, acquisition, construction, sustainable development, disposal, budget, performance, public-private partnerships, and many more.

G. Martin Wagner, Associate Administrator for the GSA Office of Governmentwide Policy (OGP), and Marjorie Lomax, Director, Evaluation and Outreach Division, in OGP's Office of Real Property, led the ceremony.

" A lot of good lessons can be learned from the successes of others," Ms. Lomax said. "We encourage you and your associates to look at this year's entries to see if your organization can benefit from the same innovative practices.
