GSA Selects Finalists for the Design of the New Census Bureau Headquartes Office Complex - Five Architect/Engineer (A/E) Firms Selected for Stage Two-Design Excellence

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced today that five Architect/Engineer (A/E) design firms have been selected for interviews to provide concept design services for the new Census Bureau Headquarters office complex. The Maryland office complex will be located on the Suitland Federal Center at the intersection of Suitland and Silver Hill roads, Suitland.

GSA is using the Design Excellence procurement process. In the first stage interested design firms submitted examples of their work and identified the lead designer with his/her portfolio. From those submissions an A/E selection panel identified five firms to move onto the second interview phase. The selected design firms and their lead designers will now be invited to assemble complete A/E teams. From these interviews the GSA A/E selection panel will choose one firm.

The five A/E design firms selected to be interviewed in Stage Two are:

1. Ai - Washington, DC
2. Eric Owen Moss Architects, Culver City, CA
3. Kohn Pederson Fox Associates, New York, NY
4. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, New York, NY
5. Studios Architecture - San Francisco, CA

The proposed facilities are two new office buildings of approximately 771,000 gross sq. ft. each, plus two new parking structures, totaling approximately 3,100 spaces. The estimated construction cost is approximately $306 million, with estimated construction duration of 36 months. GSA is anticipating expediting the completion of the project through the utilization of a Bridging Method, where the conceptual design services are completed by one of the five firms, then the final design and construction services are completed under a separate RFP solicitation.
