GSA Awards $26M Navy Supercomputer Contract

WASHINGTON, DC - Logicon Inc. will install and support a groundbreaking supercomputer through a task order recently awarded by the General Services Administration's Federal Technology Service, Federal Systems Integration and Management Center (FEDSIM), under the Millennia contract and on behalf of the Naval Research Laboratory.

The task order was competed among the 11 GSA FTS Millennia contract holders. It is a multiple-award, indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity contract vehicle. Over a 10-year period, the total projected ceiling value could exceed $25.9 million and will include maintenance, dedicated technical support, and two anticipated technology refreshment options intended to keep NRL on the cutting edge over the 10 years.

"FEDSIM's knowledge and negotiation skills led to significantly reduced cost, yet acquired a better system with more technical and maintenance support than originally proposed," said Bob Suda, Assistant Commissioner for the GSA FTS Office of Information Technology Solutions. Comparison of the original proposal to the awarded level of effort represents savings of $1.2 million.

Under the terms of the task order, a Cray all-CMOS MTA-2 multi-threaded supercomputer will allow the science and technology research community and the Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program to continue innovative exploration and evaluation of multi-processor technology. These efforts are geared toward solving significant military-related problems, which relate to computer and information science.

"It's a new architecture - no one else has done anything like this before and we will be the first to take delivery," said Dr. Jeanie Osburn, manager of NRL's High Performance Computing Distributed Center.

Through the Millennia contract, GSA is able to meet the federal government's demand for large systems integration and development projects by supporting its clients in a timely and cost-effective manner.
