Barram Confirmed as GSA Administrator

WASHINGTON, D.C.--The U.S. General Services Administration announced today that David J. Barram has been confirmed as the agency's Administrator.

Of his confirmation, effective May 28, Barram said, "It has been my honor to serve in this Administration and to assist in attaining President Clinton and Vice President Gore's goals of reinventing government. At GSA, we will continue to become more client- focused, cut costs and red tape, develop a change-receptive culture and leverage our resources by partnering with the private sector. By rebuilding confidence in the federal government, we are helping build the bridge to the 21st Century."

Barram was appointed acting GSA Administrator on March 4, 1996, by President Clinton. As the number one official, he directs all functions assigned to the executive branch independent agency, which provides expertly managed space, supplies, services and solutions at the best value so that other federal agencies can perform their missions. GSA, which has a workforce of 14,600 employees, negotiates contracts for over $40 billion in federal procurement and has an annual budget of nearly $13 billion.

Barram came to GSA from the Department of Commerce, where he served as Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer since October 1993. Prior to that, he spent 24 years in Silicon Valley in senior management positions at Apple Computer, Silicon Graphics, Inc. and Hewlett-Packard.
