WASHINGTON -- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has completed its environmental site assessment of the Lorton Correctional Complex and plans to start several remediation projects.

GSA has been conducting environmental studies of the District of Columbia prison site as part of its landholding responsibilities. The agency plans to dispose of the entire 2,700-acre property, in accordance with Fairfax County Reuse plan, as mandated by Congress.

GSA expects to start remediation projects at Lorton's firing ranges this spring and at a landfill area this summer. Remediation of the firing ranges should be complete by fall. The landfill project should be complete by spring 2001. Groundwater monitoring will continue at both locations.

GSA also is in the process of meeting its historic-preservation requirements at Lorton. It has identified portions of the property as eligible for listing on the National Register for Historic Places and is currently consulting with the community to mitigate potential negative impacts on these eligible resources.
