Washington, DC — Kathleen Leos, assistant deputy secretary and director, Office of English Language Acquisition, participated today in a seminar discussion at LULAC's 77th national convention regarding Education Policy Today: A Report Card on Latinos.

President Bush named Kathleen Leos as assistant deputy secretary and director of the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) on Sept. 1, 2005. In her position, she is the principal adviser to Secretary Margaret Spellings on all matters related to Title III of the No Child Left Behind Act and limited English proficient (LEP) students.

Leos stated, "It is a distinct honor and privilege to have been selected by President Bush to ensure that all Hispanic students and English Language Learners are given the education tools they need to succeed in America's greatest academic institutions. It is their right and our moral obligation to guarantee that No Child in America's Schools is ever left behind. They are the future of our great nation and we will guarantee our democratic legacy by fulfilling their academic dreams."

LULAC gathered its national delegates for its 77th national convention to discuss issues affecting the quality life for Hispanic Americans, set policies, and elect its organization's national leaders.

LULAC is the largest and oldest Hispanic Organization in the United States and advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.
