Description:

Objective:

This two-year subproject of the Urban Waste Management and Research Center (UMWRC) documented the challenges and issues surrounding the successful redevelopment and management of Brownfields properties throughout the United States with a particular emphasis on cities, rural , and small towns, and tribal governments. Interviews from Regional Administrators of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), State Brownfields Coordinators, Economic Development Administration specialists, Housing and Urban Development personnel, and local developers, and private companies were included. The scope of this subproject was limited to concentrating on projects that have demonstrated successful restoration and management of existing Brownfields sites. One demonstration site in each EPA region was represented in the series and was be chosen from the Nnational 2000 Phoenix Award winners.

The objective of this video project was to produce ten twentyseven- minute, high-quality videos that address Brownfields issues in urban settings and rural communities throughout the United States. This video series walks the viewers through the process of identifying Brownfields sites and the structure and role of the sites in the community; the positive economic and social benefits that result from redeveloped Brownfields; and a review of the basic issues related to Brownfields redevelopment,; such as how to remediate the site, insurance, liability, and other legal issues.

This project has been completed following more than one year of filming across the United States in all 10 EPA rregions and with more than 120 people in all aspects of Brownfields. Additionally, video documentation of actual Brownfields projects was made. This means that sports arenas, industrial parks, green spaces, and a host of other types of redevelopment projects were filmed in various stages. Also, a collection of pictures from across the United States was categorized.
