Introduction
The Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT) was designed to see whether taking
the drug tamoxifen (Nolvadex®) could prevent breast cancer in women who are
at an increased risk of developing the disease. The BCPT was also looking at
whether taking tamoxifen decreases the number of heart attacks and reduces the
number of bone fractures in these women (see
the protocol summary).
The study began recruiting participants in April 1992 and closed enrollment
in September 1997; 13,388 women ages 35 and older were enrolled. Researchers
with the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP)
conducted the study at more than 300 centers across the United States and Canada.
The study (also called the P-1 trial) was funded by the National Cancer Institute
(NCI), the United States' primary agency for cancer research.

Final Results from the NSABP Breast Cancer Prevention Trial Reported
(Posted: 11/15/2005) - Researchers from the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project who conducted the landmark Breast Cancer Prevention Trial, report a seven-year and final update of the trial results. In this final report, reductions in breast cancer incidence among participants taking tamoxifen were found to be very similar compared to those reported in 1998 when initial findings were released.
No Link Between Tamoxifen and Depression
(Posted: 11/09/2001, Reviewed: 11/14/2005) - Treatment with tamoxifen does not increase the risk of depression, according to the November 6, 2001, issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
