Yemen
For over fifty years, AMIDEAST has played a vital role in facilitating educational programs between the United States and Yemen. Our offices in Aden and Sanaa have helped over 4,000 individuals receive training or degrees from institutions of higher learning in the United States. AMIDEAST in Yemen provides English language classes to over 1,000 students annually. , AMIDEAST Yemen’s advising center in Sana’a and branch location offer group advising sessions on studying in the U.S. and coordinate the major exams required for entrance into U.S. universities, including the TOEFL, GRE, and SAT I/II as well as provide major exams such as TOEFL ITP. AMIDEAST Yemen supports scholarship programs for Yemenis including the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, and the Nexen Scholarship.
AMIDEAST activities in Yemen date back to 1952 when, under a grant from the U.S. Department of State, AMIDEAST administered a scholarship program that included fellows from Yemen. In September 1981, with support and funding from the United States Information Agency (USIA), AMIDEAST appointed a full-time representative within the United States Information Service's (USIS) compound in Sana'a for the purpose of providing advising, testing, and training services.
In 1986, AMIDEAST received formal certification for its operations in Sana'a from the Yemeni government. This allowed us to operate within the country as an international non-governmental organization. AMIDEAST established a branch office in the port city of Aden in 1998 as part of an educational technical assistance project with the International Development Association of the World Bank. The Aden office received formal recognition from the government of Yemen one year later and today plays a central role along with its project office in Mukalla in helping AMIDEAST fulfill its mission in Yemen. |
