AMIDEAST supports all Lebanese in their pursuit of higher education and professional growth. We provide a range of professional training, academic advising, and development programs in Lebanon.

AMIDEAST/Lebanon opened in 1968, offering cultural exchange activities as well as information and advice on U.S. educational opportunities. The office’s activities gradually expanded to include administration of standardized tests, educational programs, and development projects sponsored by government agencies, private companies, and local and international donor agencies. Most recently, AMIDEAST has contributed to the development of Lebanese society through such means as curriculum development assistance to individual schools and the administration of grants to local organizations to improve democratic processes and institutions.

AMIDEAST was one of the few American organizations to continue its operations in Lebanon during the civil war, and maintained offices in both East and West Beirut in order to serve all Lebanese. This presence helped preserve a vital link between Lebanese and Americans during difficult times. In April 2001, the activities of these offices were merged into a new facility in the Beirut Central District, allowing AMIDEAST to offer updated and expanded services to the Lebanese public.

Each year, AMIDEAST/Lebanon serves over 50,000 visitors. Current services and programs include:

Advising Services

  • Individualized advising for students and professionals.
  • Help preparing for tests via personal or computer-based tutorials.

Transparency and Accountability Grants (TAG)

The Transparency and Accountability Grants (TAG) project was launched in March 2001 through a cooperative agreement that USAID awarded to AMIDEAST/Lebanon and will continue until September 2008. The projects goal is to support and empower local civic association initiatives to launch activities that address corruption and promote transparency, accountability, and good governance and to enhance their role in advocating for reform in Lebanon. TAG provides grants of up to $50,000 to support local NGO and civic initiatives to conduct impact-oriented activities that fall within the above themes in Lebanons public and private sectors. Public-private partnerships which involve local organizations partnering with government agencies to improve good governance are especially encouraged. For more information about TAG, click here.

Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES)

The YES scholarship program, funded by the U.S. Embassy, gives secondary school students in Lebanon an opportunity to study at American high schools and live with American host families for one academic year. The program seeks to improve cooperation and mutual understanding between Americans and peoples of the Middle East and North Africa.
