Pavement Preservation Research Problem Statements

Background

The Pavement Preservation Research Consortium, a working group of the FHWA, highway agencies and the Foundation for Pavement Preservation, met in June 2001 to identified research needs in pavement preservation. Over 50 research topics were identified 22 of which were developed into research statements and published in the January 2000 FHWA report Pavement Preservation Research Problems Statements. The report was approved by the AASHTO Subcommittee on Maintenance. The FHWA Pavement Preservation Expert Task Group established a team at their February 2002 meeting to promote and monitor the research projects recommended in the report.

Goals

  1. Post the Research Problem Statements on the Web
  2. Find or develop a reporting and tracking method.
  3. Inform and encourage the utilization of these Problem Statements by AASHTO, TRB and Industry Research people conducting research in the area of Pavement Preservation.
  4. Track the Research Statements that were planned for research or were underway.

Status

The Pavement Preservation Research Problem Statements report was posted on the Foundation for Pavement Preservation web site. A research statement tracking system design was proposed and is currently under development. When completed, the tracking system will be hosted by the Foundation for Pavement Preservation web site, www.fp2.org. Other research tracking sources will be also be utilized.

An informational letter on the Pavement Preservation Research Problem Statements report was submitted to TRB for distribution. Another informational letter about the report with a survey was sent to the AASHTO RAC members. The survey results will be the initial source of information about adoption of the research problem states. Follow-up will be conducted with TRB and AASHTO researchers.
