Special Project 205 (SP-205) Quality Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation and Preservation

This Special Project 205 will evaluate the effect of timing on the performance of maintenance and non-overlay rehabilitation strategies. Also, the performance of individual rehabilitation and maintenance strategies for Portland cement concrete pavements will be studied and documented. SP-205 will re-examine sites and techniques studied by FHWA in the mid 1980's. In addition, the influence of new equipment and materials and the cost effectiveness of the repairs and maintenance will be reported. The output of this project will include technical bulletins on each of the strategies reviewed, and a final report to be used in updating FHWA's technical reference for CPR and preventive maintenance of PCCP. These rehabilitation and maintenance strategies are full-depth patching, partial-depth patching, subsealing, joint resealing, retrofit load transfer, and grinding and grooving. The do's and don't's, as well as the why and when for CPR and preventive maintenance will be part of the reports. SP-205 will also include six demonstration test projects to provide hands on experience and demonstrate new technology in the CPR area. The final report combining all the findings will be published in mid 1999.

A Technical Working Group (TWG) of experts is assisting in reviewing guidelines and selecting States for site reviews. The TWG will also provide comments on the reports that will be prepared for this project. About 40 sites will be selected for our reviews. Teams of up to four FHWA engineers from Headquarters, Regional and Division offices will perform the reviews. To follow-up on the previous FHWA effort of the mid 1980's, some of the sites covered in that review will be revisited. The information collected from the field will be stored on databases. Based on the analysis of the data, proper timing for repair and preventive maintenance will be defined. The rehabilitation and maintenance techniques that will be covered in SP-205 are full-depth patching, partial-depth patching, subsealing, retrofit load transfer, grinding and grooving, and joint resealing.

Work orders to test and evaluate innovative concrete pavement repair and rehabilitation techniques have been executed as follows:
