Defensive Driving Tips for Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers: An Internet-based Approach

The primary objective of this research is to provide fleet safety managers and commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers with defensive driving tips regarding common large truck safety events. More specifically, the goal of this study is to generate examples of defensive driving “do’s” and “don’ts” for CMV drivers based on the video collected during the recently completed Drowsy Driver Monitoring System (DDMS) FOT. These safe driving tips may be useful for driver safety program development and be included to provide drivers with explicit examples of what truck drivers do well and what behaviors need to be modified (and how they should be modified). The project will involve designing a user friendly website on defensive driving techniques for common hazards and risky driving behaviors encountered by CMV drivers. The website will be designed with fleet safety managers and CMV drivers as the primary audience.
