Maine State Information

EPA's mission of protecting and restoring the environment and protecting human health is shared by our partners at the state, tribal and local level as well as with our sister federal agencies and the many environmental non-profit organizations. On this page you find link to environmentally related Maine state government agencies and organizations as well as some state specific links to sister federal agencies.

Maine DEP – EPA NE Performance Partnership Agreement (PPA)
The performance partnership agreement outlines the goal, mission, activities and actions that the state environmental agency will be completing during the current performance partnership cycle (usually two or three years). The partnership is between the State of Maine's Department of Environmental Protection and EPA New England.

Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission
The purpose of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission is to protect, conserve, restore, manage and enhance Atlantic salmon habitat, populations and sport fisheries within historical habitat in all (inland and tidal) waters of the State of Maine.

Baxter State Park Authority
The Baxter State Park Authority exists to ensure that the Park "Shall forever be kept and remain in the Natural Wild State", to provide recreational opportunities to the public in accordance with trust provisions, to operate and maintain the Park for the use and enjoyment of Maine's people.

Maine Department of Agriculture
The Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources is the State's lead agency dealing with all aspects of the food system from the field to the table. The Department maintains a mission of fostering opportunities for the agriculture community and of promoting stewardship of Maine's natural resources.

Maine Department of Conservation
The Department of Conservation is a natural resource agency whose bureaus oversee the management, development and protection of some of Maine's most special places: Seventeen million acres of forestland, 10.4 million acres of unorganized territory, 47 parks and historic sites and more than 480,000 acres of public reserved land.

Maine Department of Environmental Protection (ME DEP)
Responsible for protecting and restoring Maine's natural resources and enforcing the state's environmental laws.

Maine Department of Human Services (ME DHS)
The mission of the Department of Health and Human Services is to provide health and human services to the people of Maine so that all persons may achieve and maintain their optimal level of health and their full potential for economic independence and personal development.

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife was established to ensure that all species of wildlife and aquatic resources in the State of Maine are maintained and perpetuated for their intrinsic and ecological values, for their economic contribution, and for their recreational, scientific, and educational use by the people of the State.

Maine Department of Marine Resources
The mission of the DMR is to conserve and develop marine and estuarine resources; to conduct and sponsor scientific research; to promote and develop the Maine coastal fishing industries; to advise and cooperate with local, state, and federal officials concerning activities in coastal waters; and to implement, administer, and enforce the laws and regulations necessary for these purposes.

Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention
Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention is to develop and deliver services to preserve, protect and promote the health and well-being of the citizens of Maine.

Maine State Planning Office
The State Planning Office's mission is to help build a sustainable future for Maine communities, businesses and residents, the State Planning Office: 1) advises the Governor on developing and implementing policy; 2) assists the Legislature with information and analyses; and 3) provides local and regional financial and technical assistance.

Maine Department of Transportation
The Environmental Office leads the department in proactively integrating transportation and environmental objectives and innovations as the department plans, develops, operates and maintains Maine's transportation needs.

Maine Public Utility
The Maine Public Utility regulates electricity, ferries & water taxis, gas, telecommunications and water

Maine State Energy
The State of Maine's State Energy Program, a Division of the Maine Public Utilities Commission, provides information on energy efficiency and renewable energy, technical assistance, and appropriate referrals to Maine businesses and homeowners.

Casco Bay Project (CBEP)
The Casco Bay Estuary Partnership is devoted to protecting and restoring the water quality, and fish and wildlife habitat of the Casco Bay ecosystem, while ensuring compatible human uses.

Clean Energy Maine
A statewide campaign to introduce Mainers to clean electricity from renewable resources.

Friends of Casco Bay
The friends of Casco Bay have been leading environmental organizations working to improve and protect the environmental health of Casco Bay.

Maine Efficiency
Efficiency Maine is a statewide effort to promote the more efficient use of electricity, help Maine residents and businesses reduce energy costs, and improve Maine's environment.

New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC)
A nonprofit interstate agency that serves and assists—Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont—by coordinating activities and forums that encourage cooperation among the states, educating the public about key water quality issues, supporting research projects, training environmental professionals, and providing overall leadership in water management and protection.

Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM)
A nonprofit association of air quality agencies in the Northeast. NESCAUM's Board of Directors consists of the air directors of the six New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont), New Jersey, and New York. NESCAUM provide scientific, technical, analytical, and policy support to the air quality programs of the eight Northeast states.

Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association (NEWMOA)
A nonprofit, nonpartisan interstate association that has a membership composed of the hazardous waste, solid waste, waste site cleanup and pollution prevention program directors for the environmental agencies in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. NEWMOA was established by the Governors of the New England states as an official regional organization to coordinate interstate hazardous and solid waste, and pollution prevention activities and support state waste programs.

Natural Resources Conservation Service: Maine
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides leadership and technical assistance to address natural resource conservation issues on private land.

National Marine Fisheries Service Northeast Fisheries Science Center
Understand and predict changes to marine ecosystems and their subsystems affecting living marine resources, fisheries, habitats, ecosystem condition, productivity, aquaculture, and the generation of net National benefits.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Gulf of Maine Project
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Gulf of Maine Project helps build partnerships to protect nationally important fish and wildlife habitat in the Gulf of Maine watershed.

U.S. Geological Survey: Maine
The USGS serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.
