NPL Site Narrative for Evergreen Manor GW Contamination Plume

EVERGREEN MANOR GROUND WATER CONTAMINATION
Winnebago County, Illinois

Federal Register Notice:  July 28, 1998

The Evergreen Manor Ground Water Contamination site is located in north-central Illinois, approximately three miles south of the Illinois/Wisconsin border. The site consists of a plume of ground water contaminated with as many as 17 organic compounds, and is approximately 2.25 miles long and 0.2 mile wide. More than 87 residential wells are affected by the plume.

The contaminant plume was first discovered in late 1990, when a lending institution required a local homeowner to have the home's private water supply analyzed. The analysis of the well water revealed elevated levels of volatile organic compounds. Additional sampling of residential wells in the area and monitoring wells upgradient of the area revealed a narrow plume of contamination extending from a small industrial area, southwest, through the residential area and to the Rock River. An observed release of the following compounds has been established: chloromethane, methylene chloride, 1,1-dichloroethylene (1,1-DCE), 1,1-dichloroethane (1,1-DCA), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA), trichloroethylene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (c-1,2-DCE), and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). Three of these contaminants (TCE, PCE, and 1,1-DCE) have been detected at concentrations above EPA health-based benchmarks.

Although ground water investigations have traced the plume upgradient to a small industrial/commercial area, the specific source(s) of the contamination has not been discovered. The Illinois EPA has identified four potentially responsible parties based on sampling results and historic operations.
