Tutorial

The Tutorial: Introduction to CVISN provides an overview of the CVISN Program; includes a summary of the typical CVO (Commercial Vehicle Operations) environment before and after CVISN deployment; provides an overview of Core CVISN functionality; and gives examples of best practices in the areas of e-credentialing and safety information exchange. The concept of Expanded CVISN is defined and their functional areas are identified. Benefits of the CVISN Program to motor carriers and states are also enumerated. The tutorial also addresses issues that arise when implementing CVISN, including planning, obtaining federal funding, and best practices for reaching out to industry. It concludes with a reminder of the technical assistance available from FMCSA to states to support CVISN planning and deployment.

The Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE)

The Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE) offers several courses on the Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN):

    • Introduction to ITS/CVO and CVISN (CVISN 101) and
    • Advanced CVISN (CVISN 102) .
Introduction to ITS/CVO and CVISN (CVISN 101)

This course addresses the fundamentals of Intelligent Transportation Systems / Commercial Vehicle Operations (ITS/CVO) and CVISN. After a short discussion of some key problems existing in CVO, students are introduced to the four ITS/CVO program areas: Safety Assurance, Credentials Administration, Electronic Screening, and Carrier Operations. The concepts underlying current and future strategies are described for each of these areas, as well as the technologies that can be used to carry them out. An introduction to the CVISN initiative, a subset of ITS/CVO, rounds out the course by describing CVISN goals and concepts and the steps involved for states deploying CVISN systems. The emphasis throughout the course is to provide fundamental knowledge and principles for professionals who may be new to ITS/CVO as well as experienced professionals wishing to refresh and update their knowledge on technical and deployment issues.

Advanced CVISN (CVISN 102)

This comprehensive course focuses on the nationwide partnership, the Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN). In its simplest form CVISN is an information-sharing effort, however it is far from simple with respect to the number of partners involved, the range of technologies deployed, the technical and institutional issues that must be addressed, and the funding challenges that occur throughout the CVISN life cycle. This course builds on the knowledge gained in the Introduction to ITS/CVO and CVISN (CVISN 101) by providing in-depth coverage of the major elements of CVISN deployment, including outreach, funding, implementation options, and real-world technology solutions. Students will explore CVISN planning, technical, and funding issues with an emphasis on lessons learned and best practices from experienced states. CVISN 102 is specifically designed for professionals in the public and private sectors involved in CVISN planning, deployment, or oversight activities, including project managers, architects, team members, and advisory groups.
