The White House Office of the Press Secretary today issued the following statement:
"The President intends to nominate Russ Whitehurst to be Assistant Secretary of Education for Educational Research and Improvement. He serves as the lead professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he has taught since 1970. He is a graduate of East Carolina University and received a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois."U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige said, "President Bush has made an excellent choice to head the Office of Educational Research and Improvement, one that reflects his emphasis on science-based teaching methods and early reading. I look forward to working with Russ Whitehurst to advance, organize and disseminate new information on how children learn and how schools should teach, as we all work toward the President's goal of no child left behind."
