Current Road, Trail, Campground Conditions

Since conditions throughout the park can change rapidly and unexpectedly, we recomend you please call the Visitor Center at (530)246-1225 for the most up-to-date information on park conditions.

Roads
Park roads that are still closed:

  • Shasta Bally Road from Sheep Camp to the summit of the mountain due to snow still on the road.
  • Due to salmon habitat improvements beginning May 4th, 2009 Peltier Valley Road will be closed at times. The road will be open to visitors on the weekends.

Beaches, Picnic Areas & Campgrounds:

  • Coggins Campground is not open due to a wash out.
  • Due to salmon habitat improvements beginning May 4, 2009 Peltier Bridge Campground will be closed Mondays thru Fridays until May 15th. The campground will be open on weekends during this period.
  • All other campgrounds and day use areas are open to the public for use.

Trails
Due to the 2008 fires Kanaka Peak Loop Trail is closed until further notice. A major rehabilitation project is planned to restore the trail over the next year or so.

All other park trails are open.

The U.S. Army Citadel on Alcatraz Island  

Did You Know?
In 1859 the Post on Alcatraces (Alcatraz Island) was garrisoned by the Army as the first U.S. fort on the West Coast. At its peak there were over 110 cannons mounted on the island.
