Since 1919, IIE has pioneered applied research and policy analysis in the field of international student mobility. Based in the New York City headquarters, IIE's Research and Evaluation division has conducted surveys on academic flows to and from the U.S. since 1923. Open Doors, IIE's flagship research project, supported by the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs since 1972, is recognized worldwide as the critical resource for understanding student mobility trends to and from the U.S. More recently, we have begun measuring and documenting global student mobility trends through Project Atlas which provides similar mobility data from the perspective of other leading host countries.
In addition to these two core projects, IIE provides research and program evaluation services to domestic and international governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and foundations to facilitate the collection of more comprehensive and policy-relevant data on international education, and to assess the impact of international fellowship and scholarship programs. Current and past partners include: the National Science Foundation (NSF); Australian Education International (AEI); the British Council; the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD); the East-West Center; the Alcoa Foundation, and others.
