Description:

Objective:

The linear, reversible models are unable to predict the contaminant release from aged soil and sediments. In addition, cyclic or episodic variations in the natural environment further complicate the process. The objectives of this study were to develop a predictive model that can explain the desorption mechanism, and investigate the impact of pH, salinity, temperature, and redox on the behavior of contaminant release from soil.

Progress Summary:

Considerable progress has been made on this project to date. Three Ph.D. students and one M.S. student have received their degrees in May, 2000. In the last year, the work is primarily concentrated on the adsorption, desorption and degradation of 1,1,2,2 tetrachloroethane (TeCA). The adsorption of TeCA was observed to be linear and consistent with the Frendlich isotherm as well as predictive models based on the octanol-water partition coefficient. Desorption was shown to be reversible for a small number of desorption steps then became irreversible. The results compared favorably with a model previously published by Kan et al. (1998) using semivolatile organic compounds. TeCA sorbed in the irreversible compartment is apparently not accessible to the hydrophilic hydroxide ion and therefore, not reacted to form TCE.

Future Activities:

The research will focus in developing a risk-based model. Remediation clean-up standards have move toward site-specific, risk-based levels. To determine the site-specific levels, models may be used to assess the risk at a site and calculate the required clean-up concentrations. In risk models, sorption/desorption process are typically assumed to be the simple linear isotherm, which was the origin of the inability to accurately model the contaminant level at a specific site. Work is being done in this area to incorporate the irreversible adsorption isotherm developed at Rice University to several public domain or commercially available risk models.
