Objective:

Quantify the effect of active microbial consortia on zero-valent iron TCE reductive dechlorination kinetics. Identify primary metabolisms associated with changes in zero-valent iron reductive dechlorination kinetics and/or daughter products. Identify mechanisms causing effects on zero-valent iron barrier performance (e.g. biofilms, pH changes, precipitation).To develop a model calibrated with the kinetic data observed in the lab study.

Summary/Accomplishments (Outputs/Outcomes):

Column studies showed that biological reductive dechlorination enhanced TCE dechlorination rates from zero valent iron, with a half life of 0.22 days compared to a half life of 0.43 days for abiotic zero valent iron. Biotic reductive dechlorination without zero valent iron present resulted in a half life of 0.68 days. Column studies also showed a decline in abiotic reductive dechlorination after 200 pore volumes. From 0 to 200 pore volumes cis-DCE in the column effluent was steady at 9 micrograms/L, with most TCE be completely dechlorinated to ethane. From 220 to 340 pore volumes cis-DCE increased dramatically from 9 to 890 micrograms/L. The deterioration in kinetic rates resulted from a combination of precipitates and biofilm which reduced the active zero-valent iron surface area. Biogenic gas data from the columns confirmed the presence of methanogenesis but was inconclusive with respect to sulfidogenesis. Subsequent microcosm studies again showed an initial synergistic effect of biological activity in conjunction with zero-valent iron. This effect was statistically significant at low sulfate concentrations. However the effect was also significantly enhanced by raising sulfate concentrations. Studies with metabolic inhibitors showed that inhibiting either methanogenic or sulfidogenic primary metabolisms significantly decreased kinetic rates of reductive dechlorination. This implied that both populations were significant contributors to the biotic reductive dechlorination which enhanced zero-valent iron kinetics. Microcosm studies were not operated to the point of zero-valent iron inhibition by precipitates/biofilms, although they were operated for many months. A modeling effort was conducted. Analysis of the abiotic zero-valent iron data indicated that first order dechlorination rates were adequate for modeling most transformations of TCE and the very small quantities of daughter products observed. However in the case of combined biotic and abiotic reductive dechlorination (iron plus biological activity) first order kinetics were not entirely adequate. The data was inconclusive but Monod kinetics may be useful in modeling this synergistic phenomena, or the combined effect might possibly be modeled as a second order degradation pathway. The main conclusions were that predicting performance of zero-valent iron barriers without accounting for biological activity may result in significant errors. However the effects can be synergistic, a phenomena which is not completely understood at a fundamental level, or antagonistic, particularly in the long term. Both methanogenic and sulfidogenic primary metabolisms were implicated in synergistic effects, with sulfidogenic metabolism in particular resulting in decreased TCE half lives. However there was also the potential for increased daughter product concentrations with biotic activity (particularly cis-DCE), and designs of zero-valent iron barriers might have to account for different kinetic rates to complete the reductive dechlorination of these daughter products, which tend to have lower first order dechlorination rate constants than TCE. This accumulation of daughter products becomes much more significant as the zero-valent iron begins to fail and in such cases it may be possible to use cis-DCE concentrations within or just down gradient of a zero-valent iron permeable barrier to predict imminent failure prior to significant increases in down gradient TCE concentrations. The research suggests that it would be desirable to maintain synergistic biotic activity if long-term degradation of the zero-valent iron could be prevented. The research was not conclusive in determining whether or not the biological activity was a significant factor in causing the fouling and/or corrosion of the zero-valent iron since scanning electron microscopy revealed a complex film matrix of inorganic precipitates as well as cells. It was also not conclusive in determining if biological activity increased or decreased the rate at which this fouling/corrosion occurred.
