One in Seven

Your chances of knowing someone with learning disabilities are very good, since it is estimated that 15 percent of the U.S. population, or one in seven Americans, has some type of learning disability.

Among school-age children, more than 6 percent are currently receiving special education services because of learning disabilities – that’s almost 3 million students!

Children with learning disabilities begin school expecting to learn and be successful. If your child is having difficulty in school, she may learn differently from other kids. Parents are often the first to notice that “something doesn’t seem right.” But sometimes knowing what to do and where to find help can be confusing.

This section of our Web site is designed to give you a quick overview of learning disabilities. Intended for parents who are concerned about their child’s learning problems, it will provide the information you will need to begin to help yourself and help your child.

First, let’s start by defining what learning disabilities are (and are not.)
