Sharon J. Banks - Acting Regional Administrator, National Capital Region

Sharon Jenkins Banks was appointed Acting Regional Administrator for GSA’s National Capital Region (NCR) on January 20, 2009. 

As the head of the National Capital Region, Banks oversees a real estate portfolio of 93 million square feet in an inventory of more than 880 government-owned and leased facilities that house nearly 300,000 federal workers. GSA’s National Capital Region serves federal agency clients throughout the Washington, DC metro area.

Before this appointment, Banks was NCR’s deputy regional administrator and was responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of NCR’s staff offices while assisting with the planning and directing of all other activities as they relate to regional functions. Banks served as director of NCR's Metropolitan Service Center, with multidisciplinary oversight for tailoring solutions to meet federal agencies' unique requirements. Previously, she was the deputy director of assets for the center and has also served as the acting deputy director of business and customers.  During her GSA career, she was a supervisor in the Employee and Labor Relations Branch of the Human Resources Division; a special assistant to the deputy and associate regional administrators; and a special assistant to the assistant regional administrator for Public Buildings Service. 

Banks has been a federal employee for 34 years and has received numerous awards for outstanding accomplishments. She has worked at the National Labor Relations Board, the Department of Veteran Affairs, and as director of administration for the National Capital Planning Commission.

Banks is a native of North Carolina and has a bachelor of science degree in organizational management from Columbia Union College. She is a 2007 graduate of the Federal Executive Institute’s Leadership for Democratic Society, a certified project manager, a 2002 graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a 1992 graduate of the Executive Potential Program.
