Research Project:
Sensor Technologies for Assessing Quality and Maturity of Tree Fruit
Location: Sugarbeet and Bean Research
Project Number: 3635-43000-004-06
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jul 13, 2005
End Date: Sep 30, 2009
Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop imaging and/or spectroscopy-based techniques for assessing and grading quality and/or maturity of apples and other tree fruits. Specific objectives of the research are to: 1) develop a multispectral imaging and/or near-infrared sensing system for assessing apple fruit quality; 2) develop improved mathematical models and image processing algorithms for accurate predictions of fruit firmness, soluble solids, and other attributes; and 3) Integrate computer algorithms into the prototype for sorting and grading apples for firmness and soluble solids.
Approach:
Multispectral scattering/NIR spectroscopy will be investigated for measuring apple fruit firmness. Optimal wavelengths will be identified and corresponding lighting designs will be proposed and implemented in the multispectral imaging system. Improved mathematical models and computer algorithms will be developed to better describe light scattering and relate scattering features to fruit internal quality such as firmness, sugar, and acid. An improved version of the prototype will be designed and assembled for real time sorting and grading fruit for firmness and soluble solids.
