Research Project: DETERMINATION OF THE ANTIFUNGAL PROPERTIES OF ASIAN PLANTS

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 6435-41000-097-02
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 03, 2006
End Date: Dec 31, 2009

Objective:
To determine the fungicidal properties of crude, semipure, and pure compounds extracted from plants.

Approach:
(1) Plants will be extracted and these crude extracts freeze dried. Bioassays using fungi will determine the fungicidal activity of these crude extracts. (2) Chemical constituents of the crude extracts showing antifungal activity will be semipurified by liquid chromatography. Eluates will be freeze dried followed by the determination of fungicidal activity. (3) Semipure compounds having antifungal properties will be further separated by additional chromatographic procedures to obtain pure compounds which will be tested in fungal bioassays to determine the presence of the active compound.
